Naval Intelligence then assigns Fairburne the task of rescuing one of their agents captured while gathering information on Vahlen's work. The agent is held at Fort Rifugio, a POW camp once occupied by the British during Operation Compass. The Long Range Desert Group agrees to transport Fairburne in exchange for his assistance in capturing the German-held Halfaya Pass. Fairburne infiltrates the enemy camp and destroys several Flak 88 anti-aircraft guns.

Subsequently, Fairburne successfully infiltrates Fort Rifugio and liberates the informant, Brauer. Brauer provides Fairburne with the location of Vahlen's command, a desert village in the Siwa Oasis of Western Egypt.
