 Tomb Raider 1+2+3 Introduction:

Tomb Raider, also known as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, was a media franchise spanning from 2001 to 2008. It originated with an action-adventure video game series created by the British gaming company Core Design. Initially owned by Eidos Interactive and later by Square Enix Europe following Square Enix's acquisition of Eidos in 2009, the franchise revolves around the fictional British archaeologist Lara Croft. She embarks on globe-trotting adventures to uncover lost artifacts and explore treacherous tombs and ruins. The gameplay primarily emphasizes exploration, puzzle-solving, navigating perilous environments fraught with traps, and engaging in combat with adversaries. The franchise expanded beyond video games with film adaptations, comics, and novels.

Excitingly, on January 27, 2023, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Phoebe Waller-Bridge would be the writer for a TV show adaptation of the video game franchise on Amazon. This adaptation was expected to include a connected universe with tie-in video games and movies, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Gameplay:

The development of the original Tomb Raider game commenced in 1994 and was released two years later. Its remarkable success prompted Core Design to release a new game annually for the following four years, placing considerable strain on the development team. The sixth game, The Angel of Darkness, faced significant development challenges and was considered a failure upon release. As a result, Eidos entrusted Crystal Dynamics with the development duties, and they have remained the series' primary developer since. Other developers have contributed to spin-off titles and ports of mainline entries.

By 2022, Tomb Raider games had sold over 95 million copies worldwide, while the entire franchise had generated nearly $1.2 billion in revenue by 2002. The series consistently received critical acclaim, and Lara Croft emerged as one of the most iconic video game protagonists, earning recognition on the Walk of Game and Guinness World Records.

The first six Tomb Raider games were developed by Core Design, a British video game development company under the ownership of Eidos Interactive. After the lukewarm reception of the sixth installment in 2003, development was shifted to the American studio Crystal Dynamics, which has been responsible for the main series since then. Since 2001, other developers have contributed to either ports of mainline games or the development of spin-off titles.

The series' inaugural entry, Tomb Raider, made its debut in 1996 for personal computers (PC), PlayStation, and Sega Saturn consoles. The Saturn and PlayStation versions were introduced in Japan in 1997. Tomb Raider II followed in 1997, available for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation. Just before its release, Eidos sealed an exclusivity deal with Sony Computer Entertainment, keeping the console version of Tomb Raider II and subsequent games exclusive to PlayStation until the year 2000. The PlayStation version was released in Japan in 1998. Tomb Raider III arrived in 1998, with the PlayStation version hitting Japanese shelves the following year. The fourth installment, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, was released in 1999. In 2000, as the PlayStation exclusivity deal concluded, the game also launched on the Dreamcast. Both console versions reached Japan the following year. Tomb Raider Chronicles, released in 2000, shared platforms with The Last Revelation, and the PlayStation version saw its Japanese release as before.

Final Words:

Following a three-year gap, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness was released in 2003 for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 2 (PS2). The PlayStation 2 version arrived in Japan the same year. The subsequent entry, Tomb Raider: Legend, hit the worldwide market in 2006, available on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation Portable (PSP), GameCube, Game Boy Advance (GBA), and Nintendo DS. The Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable versions were released in Japan the same year. A year later, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, a remake of the first game, debuted worldwide in 2007 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360, and the Wii. The next installment, Tomb Raider: Underworld, was released in 2008 on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 (PS3), PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Wii, and DS. The PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Wii versions reached Japan in 2009.
